Supportive and palliative care
Forty-two community pharmacies geographically spread across Northern Ireland are participating in these palliative care networks. Each pharmacy:
- stock a range of locally agreed medicines commonly used for symptom management in palliative care;
- can provide information and advice on use of these medicines.
Community pharmacies currently participating in palliative care networks are located in the following towns:

Patients and/or their carers are encouranged to continue to use their usual community pharmacy to obtain prescriptions and medicines advice. However, if specialist palliative medicines are required urgently, then a local palliative care pharmacy can be contacted by your usual Community Pharmacist, Community Nurse, GP or out-of-hours medical service.

Network palliative care pharmacies can be accessed via local healthcare professionals both within and outside working hours.
General Referal Statement:
Healthcare professionals have access to their local HSSB service protocol
and contact details for local palliative care network pharmacies.

Via your GP, Community Nurse, usual Community Pharmacy, Out of Hours medical service
Mode of Referral : for Healthcare Professional
Telephone - a daytime contact number and an out of hours contact number are available for each network pharmacy. When a drug cannot be sourced in the community, protocals for local back-up supply arrangements are in place.
