Supportive and palliative care

Forty-two community pharmacies geographically spread across Northern Ireland are participating in these palliative care networks. Each pharmacy:

  • stock a range of locally agreed medicines commonly used for symptom management in palliative care;
  • can provide information and advice on use of these medicines.
    Community pharmacies currently participating in palliative care networks are located in the following towns:

Patients and/or their carers are encouranged to continue to use their usual community pharmacy to obtain prescriptions and medicines advice.  However, if specialist palliative medicines are required urgently, then a local palliative care pharmacy can be contacted by your usual Community Pharmacist, Community Nurse, GP or out-of-hours medical service.

Network palliative care pharmacies can be accessed via local healthcare professionals both within and outside working hours.

General Referal Statement: 

Healthcare professionals have access to their local HSSB service protocol and contact details for local palliative care network pharmacies.

Mode of Referral : for Service User 

Via your GP, Community Nurse, usual Community Pharmacy, Out of Hours medical service

Mode of Referral : for Healthcare Professional 

Telephone - a daytime contact number and an out of hours contact number are available for each network pharmacy. When a drug cannot be sourced in the community, protocals for local back-up supply arrangements are in place.
