There are currently two full time lung cancer nurse specialists employed by the Belfast City Hospital. One is based on the Belfast City Hospital site and the other is predominantly based on the Royal Group of Hospitals site. These nurses have links with the oncologists, thoracic surgeons, respiratory physicians and palliative medicine consultants. They work closely with the other members of the healthcare team such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers and dietitians and link closely with community colleagues to help plan and co-ordinate your care. Lung cancer nurse specialists act as a resource for other healthcare professionals both in hospital and community settings offering telephone advice and training/education.

Lung Cancer nurse specialists may be asked to see patients and their families from diagnosis onwards for any of the following reasons:

  • Support
  • Provision of information in relation to lung cancer and its treatment
  • Symptom management
  • Advice about social and financial issues
  • Advice regarding complex discharge planning
  • Assessment for transfer to a Specialist Palliative Care unit or referral to community palliative care services.
