Action Cancer, Northern Ireland's leading cancer charity provides early detection services, health promotion and support services, including counselling and complementary therapies, for cancer patients and their families.

Action Cancer is a voluntary organisation providing four key areas of cancer service:

  1. Early detection of cancer
  2. Support services for cancer patients and their familes
  3. Cancer prevention
  4. Health promotion

Action Cancer's early detection services for breast cancer began in 1978.  Since then approximately 230,000 women in Northern Ireland have received a mammogram through the charity.  The screening facility is available from Action Cancer House in Belfast and on the Big Bus mobile resource centre.

The Big Bus service is designed to travel to over 200 locations per year visiting communities and workplaces across Northern Ireland.  In addition to breast screening the Big Bus also offers MOT health checks including cholesterol testing, blood pressure and pulse rate, body composition analysis and lung capacity.

Action Cancer strives to offer a range of excellent quality support services for anyone affected by cancer, the individual and their family, at any stage of their experience.  The team of complementary therapists offer aromatherapy, massage, reflexology and touch therapy both within the Action Cancer House, and in partnership with other organisations including the Macmillan Centre, Belfast City Hospital and the Haematology ward in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

In addition to early detection and support services, health promotion programmes are delivered to men and women in the workplace and in community groups, and to young people and children in schools.  All programmes cover healthy behaviours and cancer prevention, working to empower individuals to make informed, positive health decisions to help reduce cancer incidence.

Action Cancer also supports and funds cancer research.

Action Cancer is funded entirely by voluntary donations and has an income of around £3 million per annum.
