Services available at the organisation
Action Cancer
is a voluntary organisation providing four key areas of cancer service:
- Early detection of cancer
- Support services for cancer patients and those close to them
- Health promotion services for men, women and children
- Funding for local cancer research
Action Cancer's early detection services for breast and cervical cancer began in 1978. In the intervening years 100 000 women have used these services at Action Cancer House. Services provided include mammography, cervical screening and instruction in breast awareness. A further 55 000 have used the mobile early detection service. This service visits communities and workplaces throughout Northern Ireland offering cervical screening and instruction in breast awareness.
Over recent years the therapeutic services offered to patients with cancer and their families have expanded and over 10 000 clients have used the service to date. These services include counselling
and complementary therapies. Action Cancer also funds the Action Cancer Complementary Therapy
Coordinator based in Belfast City Hospital.
In addition to early detection and support services, health promotion activity is undertaken with men and women in the workplace and in community groups and with young men and women and children in schools. All health promotion programmes cover healthy behaviours and cancer prevention.
Action Cancer's men's health programme started in 1997 offering an evening clinic for men concerned about prostate or testicular cancer. An annual men's campaign is also undertaken to raise awareness among men of male specific cancers and to encourage men to seek help if they have a concern.
Action Cancer also supports cancer research. Currently we offer a project grant worth £45 000 per annum, one PhD studentship per annum and several pilot grants of £10 000.
Action Cancer is funded entirely by voluntary donations and has an income of around £2 million per annum.
