Radiotherapy is one of the treatment modalities used to treat cancer. Each year the radiotherapy department at the cancer centre treats approximately 4000 new patients with radiotherapy. As patients spend the majority of their time in their own home they may require additional care during radiotherapy or for several weeks after radiotherapy has finished. This care will be delivered by GPs, District Nurses and other Care Services. A request was conveyed from the NICaN Primary Care group for the development of Network agreed guidelines for the management of patients who become ill whilst receiving radiotherapy or within 6 weeks of completing radiotherapy.
