Educational Maintenance Allowance
Educational Maintenance Allowance is paid to help young people aged 16 to 19 to stay in education. The amount paid is based on the income of the adults who are responsible for the young person. It won't affect any benefits they are claiming.
How can I apply?
For pupils aged 16-18, apply to the Department of Employment and Learning. You can get a claim form from your school, college or local Social Security or Jobs and Benefits office. You can also download a form from www.delni.gov.uk.
For pupils aged 19 and over, contact your local Education and Library Board (ELB). See www.education-support.org.uk/parents/benefits/ema for more information.
Your local Education and Library Board may also be able to help with the cost of travel to school. Contact them or more details. Click here to go to a Department of Education web page listing all the ELBs.
