What is kidney cancer?
Kidney cancer
is a disease that starts in the cells
of the kidney.
Cancer occurs when normal body cells get out of control, multiply and spread. These cells clump together to form a cancerous or malignant
tumour
which can then grow and damage healthy parts of the body.
There are different types of kidney cancer. The most common one is renal
cell carcinoma
(RCC). More than eight out of 10 patients have this type.
Wilm’s tumour is a rare kidney cancer that affects young children.
Another type of kidney cancer is called transitional cell carcinoma (TCC). It grows on the lining of the kidneys and ureters and is related to bladder cancer.
