What is cancer of the gall bladder?
Cancer
occurs when normal body cells
get damaged and out of control. These damaged cells don’t stop growing, but instead multiply and spread. They do not die as damaged cells normally do. The cells form a lump, called a cancerous (malignant
) tumour
. The tumour then grows and damages healthy parts of the body.
Primary gall bladder cancer usually starts in the inner lining of the wall of the gall bladder. It spreads through the outer layers as it grows.
Gall bladder cancer is not common. There are only about 500 cases a year in the UK.
