What causes cancer of the gall bladder?

It is very rare in people under 50 years old. It is most often seen in people aged over 60 years. It is between 2 and 3 times more common in women than in men.

The causes are not known. Some conditions may have a possible link. You may have an increased risk of gall bladder cancer if:

  • you have gallstones

  • you have cholecystitis (inflamed gall bladder)

  • you have been exposed to certain chemicals

  • you are a typhoid carrier

  • you have gall bladder polyps

  • you have an abnormal bile duct where the pancreatic bile duct meets the common bile duct.

There is no evidence that gall bladder cancer is inherited, or that it runs in families. This means that if someone in your family has it, other members of the family do not have an increased risk of the cancer.
