What will life be like after treatment for cancer of the vulva?

Most women with cancer of the vulva have surgery, and it takes a few weeks to recover from the physical effects of this. You may feel sore for a while – but your nurse will tell you what you can do to feel better, and painkillers will help.

Surgery to this part of the body can be upsetting for many women. If you need to have quite a large area of your vulva taken away, it may take time for you to get used to the change in your body and how it looks.

Once you have recovered from the surgery you will be able to enjoy a normal sex life again, although if you have had your clitoris removed your enjoyment may be reduced.

Radiotherapy can make you feel tired, but you will gradually feel better once your treatment is over.

Your doctor and nurse will explain what may happen in your case. If you have any questions or worries, please don’t be afraid to ask.
