What is cancer of the uterus?

Cancer occurs when normal body cells get out of control, multiply and spread. These cells clump together to form a cancerous or malignant tumour that can then grow and damage healthy parts of the body.

There are different types of cancer of the uterus. By far the most common type is endometrial cancer, which starts in the lining of the uterus.

A rarer type starts in the muscular wall of the uterus. This type of cancer is called a sarcoma.

The information in this section of the website is about endometrial cancer.

Your doctor will tell you which type of cancer you have.
