What are the symptoms of cancer of the pancreas?

Cancer of the pancreas can be hard to detect. It may have been growing for quite a long time before it causes any symptoms.

Symptoms are often vague, and may be mistaken for other illnesses.

The most common ones are:

  • pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen – a bit like indigestion. It may be worse when lying down. Sometimes it spreads around to the back of the body
  • loss of weight
  • not feeling hungry.

Sometimes the cancer blocks the bile duct so that you get signs of jaundice. You may notice:

  • dark-coloured urine
  • yellow eyes and skin
  • pale bowel motions
  • itchy skin.

More rarely, the cancer causes the pancreas to make too much insulin. If so, you may feel tired, irritable, dizzy or drowsy.
