What causes cancer of the larynx?
Cancer
of the larynx
is mainly a disease of middle and late life. Most patients are over 45.
It affects both men and women, although it is more common in men.
Doctors don't always know what has caused a patient's cancer. However, you are more likely to get cancer of the larynx if:
- you smoke
- you drink heavily, particularly spirits
- you have repeated exposure to sulphuric acid mist, nickel, chromium, uranium or asbestos
- you have had radiotherapy
to the thyroid, neck or upper chest area, however long ago.
Most people with these risk factors will not get cancer of the larynx. If you have worries, discuss them with your GP.
