Laparoscopy to test for bile duct cancer

A laparoscopy is an examination of the inside of the abdomen using a telescopic instrument with a fibre-optic light and a tiny camera. It is used when X-rays and ultrasound examinations are not enough.

Two small cuts are made in the skin and muscle of the abdomen. Through one cut a needle is passed. and gas injected to stretch the abdomen. The other cut is used to let the surgeon pass in the laparoscope.

The surgeon often uses ultrasound to help position the laparoscope.

After a laparoscopy you will have to stay in hospital overnight, and possibly for several days more.
