Sometimes, because it can be hard to tell whether someone has cancer or another disease, exploratory surgery may be needed.

The surgeon will cut open the abdomen and look at the bile ducts and the tissue surrounding them. You will be prepared as for major surgery, and if there is cancer, the surgeon may remove the cancer or relieve the blockages caused by the tumour.
