Why might I have radiotherapy?

You might have radiotherapy to try to cure your cancer. This is called radical treatment.

Some people have it to relieve symptoms such as pain, and to make them feel better. This is palliative treatment.

If you are going to have a bone marrow or stem cell transplant (for example, for leukaemia) you may have radiotherapy to prepare you for it. This is called total body irradiation, or TBI.

You may have radiotherapy on its own, or with another treatment such as surgery or chemotherapy.

Everyone is different. Even patients with the same cancers may have different treatments. Your doctor will make a treatment plan for your exact needs.
