What is a treatment session like?
When you arrive
You will need to tell the reception staff that you have arrived. After that, you will stay in the waiting area until it is time for your treatment.
You will then need to take off some of your clothes, and put on a gown. It's best to wear clothes that are easy to get on and off. Try to leave valuables at home, so there is less risk of losing them.
In the treatment room
Your radiographers will explain exactly what is going to happen.
They will put you in the right position on a couch beside the treatment machine. You stay in the same position during treatment. You need to keep still, but you can breathe normally.
When you are ready, the radiographers leave the room and switch on the machine. Your radiographers will watch you from outside the room.
You are on your own in the room during treatment, but your radiographers are just outside at the machine console. They watch you on a TV screen to make sure you are all right. They can hear you and talk with you on their intercom.
The treatment machine is big and makes quite a loud noise when it is switched on. It may come very close to you, but it will not touch you. It makes a constant buzzing noise. When your treatment is over, your radiographers will come back in.
Afterwards
You can get dressed again and go home. You will not be radioactive and you can't harm your family and friends.
