Cancer Focus Northern Ireland today welcomed the Chancellor’s Budget announcement raising the price of cigarettes and rolling tobacco.

Tax on all tobacco products will increase by 2% above inflation and by 3% for hand rolling tobacco.

Gerry McElwee, Head of Cancer Prevention at Cancer Focus NI, said: “There is good evidence of the effectiveness of tax increases in reducing smoking prevalence both by encouraging quitting and discouraging uptake among young people, who are particularly price sensitive.

“This increase will help bring the end of the tobacco epidemic a step closer by discouraging young people from taking up smoking and encouraging adult smokers to quit. This is a move in the right direction towards creating a smokefree generation.”
